As a permanent residency you have many of the rights that citizens have. But as a citizen, you get your Australian passport so you no longer need to apply for Australian visas or notify Immigration.

You will also have the right to vote.

You can apply for your Australian citizenship once you have lived in Australia on a valid visa for 4 years with the last 12 months as a permanent resident. In this case, you must hold your permanent residency visa for 12 months before you can apply.

You should check the stamps in your passport. You should not have spent more than 3 months per year outside of Australia during the previous 4 years, and you have not left the country for more than 12 months in total within the 4 years before you make your application.

Processing times vary, however the standard processing timeframe is about 2-4 weeks.

It would make things easier to use your Australian passport. However if your Australian passport has expired,
you may travel on another passport, if you are able to show proof of your Australian citizenship (citizenship cert) or you hold a valid visa.

Yes, you must sit the Citizenship test if you are aged between 18 – 60.

There are 20 questions which covers basic knowledge surrounding Australia and its people and laws.
The purpose of the test is that you become familiar with Australian life and the responsibilities and
privileges of Australian citizenship, its people, customs and language. You must score a 75% pass mark.

You may have to sit the Australian citizenship interview if you don’t need to do the citizenship test.
Again the aim is to ensure that you understand the privileges of citizenship and have a basic knowledge of the English language.

You must attend a Citizenship ceremony within 12 months of securing Australian citizenship in order to
take the Australian Citizenship Pledge to complete the process of Australian citizenship.
